Art Vocabulary
Primary Colors: three colors from which all other colors are made: red, blue and yellow.
Secondary Colors: colors made by mixing two primary colors. Secondary colors are: orange, green and violet.
Tertiary (Intermediate) Colors: colors that are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color; blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange & yellow-green.
Warm Colors: colors, such as red, orange and yellow, that remind us of things that are warm and energetic such as fire and heat, which appear on one half of the color wheel.
Cool Colors: colors such as green, blue and violet that remind us of things that are cool and calm such as ice and water which appear on one half of the color wheel.
Tint: a lighter value of a color made by adding white to a color.
Shade: a darker value of a color made by adding black to a color.
Pattern: a group of repeating lines, shapes, or colors.
Repetition: the act of being repeated, or appearing again & again.
Rhythm: patterns of color, lines, or shapes that your eye follows that create a feeling of movement.
Texture: the way a surface feels.
Visual Texture: texture that can be seen rather than felt.
